MARCH 2003 — We are pleased to announce the addition of the Interactive Metronome® Training Program to our multi-modal treatment program for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and other behavior and learning difficulties.

What is the Interactive Metronome® (IM) Training Program?

The Interactive Metronome® is a computer-based training program shown to improve attention, coordination and time in children and adults with a wide range of cognitive and physical difficulties including Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The IM provides a non-invasive way to stimulate learning and development.

How Does IM Training Work?

Timing is Everything . . .

The IM program typically involves 15 sessions (45 minutes to 1 hour each) with sessions 2 to 3 times per week. During each session, the computer produces a metronome beat heard through headphones. As the participant listens, he/she performs various hand and foot exercises for a high number of repetitions to a rhythmic beat. Auditory tones provide immediate feedback, letting the participant know if the response was on time, early, or late. The difference between the participant's response and the actual beat is measured in milliseconds and a score is provided.

The ultimate goal is to achieve a low IM score, which indicates improved performance. Research has clearly shown that the brain learns through repetition of precise activities. By keeping the beat, the brain is trained to plan, sequence and process information more effectively.

What are the Benefits of IM Training?

First, the IM training is physically interactive so participants stay engaged and challenged. Overall, IM training has shown to improve:

  • Focus & Attention
  • Control of Aggression & Impulsivity
  • Overall Coordination
  • Reading and Language Processing

What is the history of IM?

Interactive Metronome, Inc. was founded in the early 1990's. After nearly a decade of research , the patented IM program was introduced for the first time in 1999 to qualified professionals. IM continues its dedication to research and development and relies on a Clinical Advisory Board (CAB) to govern research and certification standards. The CAB is comprised of many thought leaders, including nationally recognized child psychiatrist, Stanley I. Greenspan, M.D.

The company has received broad media recognition including the CBS Early Show, CNN News, US News and World Report, as well as health and education segments aired on hundreds of TV affiliates, major metro radio stations, and numerous national publications.

Currently, there are 1,000+ certified IM providers in over 800 clinics, hospitals, and school systems throughout the United States and Canada.

"The Interactive Metronome® is spectacularly helpful. It is one of the most promising developments with non-medication of ADHD that's come along in a long while. . . . This is really solid, extremely helpful non-medication not only for ADHD but for mental functioning in general."
